Historical Building
EMINONU "The area is near the ancient harbor of the city and many important religious and commercial buildings are located in the region."
Istanbul, a city that hosted 3 different civilizations, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman civilizations, is also the only city in the world through which the sea is running and again the only city that is located on two separate continents.
The oldest settlement of this city, the most bustling area in the historical peninsula, also known as “the walled city of Constantine,” is Eminönü. Spices from far east, wheat from Crimea, fur from Russia, wine from Greece, alum from west Anatolia, wool from Asia minor, silk from Persia, fabric from Armenia and East. All gather together here!

Some hail Eminönü as quintessential Istanbul, while some see it just a crowd of people. In Eminönü, some distill happiness from feeding birds, and some from being in touch with history. Located in the historical core of Istanbul and inside the Byzantine walls, Eminönü has been known as the beating heart of trade for centuries… The distinction of these streets as a trade and finance hub dates back to Byzantine era. In the days of the Byzantine Empire, the area circled the Port of Neorion and was the top choice for settlement for the Latin colonisers, especially the Genoese and Pisan, who had secured concessionary areas in the city from the 10th century onwards. The destiny of one of its most important quarters, Sirkeci, was pretty much the same during both Byzantine and Ottoman eras: a trade hub that imports were shipped in and stored, and one where sailors and merchants rushed about. In brief, the most famous port quarter of Istanbul. The final destination of the famous Orient Express, the Sirkeci Station is also another important part of this chain. The Grand Post Office, a structure that marks 20th century architecture, and other historical business blocks are integral part of this historical architectural family. At night, the crowd of the day simply vanishes. Eminönü at night and Eminönü during the day are as different as night and day. The population goes from 3 million during the day to 50,000 at night. This happens to be the most charming, most affordable, most varied, most local and most global shopping mall of the city. It presents itself as an open bazaar with its ceaseless commotion and its melange of trade complexes, covered markets, drinking fountains, madrasas, and mosques. As you walk through its historic streets that seem to turn back the clocks, you cannot help daydreaming about the days of the two empires and concluding that this is by far the most beautiful area of the city.

Read MoreGermanya Han by Jasmund is an epitome of solemn German architecture. It was built as an isosceles triangle due to the shape of the plot that it occupies. The side that faces the square is finished in a circular form and with a tower crowned by a dome. The symmetrically built façades is adorned in a baroque-inspired style in the ground floor as well as on the 4th and 5th levels. The Germanya Han building represents a new sample of the Central European architectural perception in Istanbul, while its neoclassical style reflects the Ottoman realm during the Westernization period and the tastes of a European bank that operated in the region. With its ship bow shape, Germanya Han is also a symbol of Eminönü, which as a gateway to the city, satisfied the expectations of exoticism of Western explorers with its oriental features but also of the district’s new and bold economic structure, based on an unshakable financial foundation.
Deutsche Orient Bank, the founder of Anatolian Ottoman Imperial Railway, aimed at providing financial support to German companies that were vying to partake in Turkish market and railway industries, and consolidate their preferential status in international competition by commissioning the construction of the Germania Han via a Stuttgart Bank tender. The building, like the other trade buildings of the area, was occupied by numerous people and corporations for varying durations. Offices within the building witnessed small and local renovations by various parties and most of components of the building have been entirely replaced through put this period.
